War Study (Part 3)

Hopefully, you’re becoming persuaded that though it is startling, core-shaking even, when the enemy roars and rails at us, there is no real power behind all of that noise.  The only true source of power is the sovereign God whom we serve.  The enemy can come no farther than the King allows; and the King only allows that which He intends to use for the good of His people.  While we’re promised that we will have suffering in this life, the glorious part is that it will never be senseless suffering.

It may not always make sense to us; however, there is always a plan and purpose whether we can see it or not.  Don’t be surprised if the enemy turns up the heat in his assaults on you!  As you recognize that you are a child of the King and begin crying out to your Father, the enemy sees that his hands will soon be tied.  In fact, before long, he won’t be able to bother us anymore at all.  When he begins wreaking havoc in your life, just remind him that his days are numbered and rejoice that the victory has already been won!

Up to his same old tricks…

  • Given that you’ve recently studied the Fall of Man in Genesis 3 and the “I Will’s” of Satan in Isaiah 14, now go to Matthew 4 and read with new eyes the temptation of Jesus (verses 1-11). Pay particular attention to what he says and the things he wants Jesus to do. Does anything stand out to you?

  • 2 Corinthians 11:14 refers to him as “transformed into an angel of light.”  Read that passage for context and then think about how Satan has historically worked to separate God from His people; sowing doubt about what God said, painting God negatively (He knows when you eat of the tree, you’ll be like gods knowing good and evil…). The problems in the Corinthian church exist in the body of Christ (THE Church) today. Do you see it?  What are your observations as they relate to this passage, to the angel of light? Does it stir up a desire in you to fight back?

Totally & Completely Defeated…that roar is all he’s got.

  • Read Luke 10:17-24. Now, we’re not going to test out verse 19 with live snakes, so don’t get scared!  But DO take note of WHO has the power, and what he does with that power.  Also take note of what Jesus states is the actual important matter in verse 20. See, power is nice, but a relationship with the Father is better. That’s what Satan just never seemed to understand; he wanted power more than the presence of the Father. Now, he seeks to keep man separated from the Father.  As you think through these things and read the passage, share your thoughts:

  • Now, Read Revelation 12. If you have any doubt about who the dragon is, verse 9 will make it all very plain for you. Read the whole chapter, but pay particular attention to verses 7 through 12.
    • Side Note: All my life, I’ve heard the expression, “I’ve read the back of the book, and we win,” repeated in church settings over and over again.  I was never fond of that expression. As I studied this, that expression came to mind again, and it occurred to me why it bothers me.  Sisters, if we have to get to the back of the Book to figure out we win, then we’ve missed it!  We won back in Genesis when God started the redemption strategy rolling even as he was explaining the curse to Adam, Eve & the serpent.  The enemy has NEVER prevailed. He got THROWN OUT of Heaven; he didn’t leave of his own accord because he was mad at God. He thought he could take over and was tossed out!  His power here is limited; he can only do what God allows. WE WIN because the God of the universe has this crazy love for us that causes Him to want a relationship with us so much that He would go to the lengths of John 3:16 to have it!  If that doesn’t both stun & humble your socks off, I don’t know what will! (putting the soap box away now, and that is just strictly my opinion).
  • In Verse 9, our enemy is identified by many names and a purpose. What is the purpose you see there?

  • In Verse 11, how do we overcome him?

  • The last part of verse 12 says (fill in the blanks), “for the devil is come ____________ unto you, having great _____________, because he _____________ that he hath but a ______________ time.”  For us who are currently “inhabiters of the earth” we should be sober & vigilant, always on the look-out for him because he wants to devour us. This verse could be considered scary to some; you know, the devil is out to get you after all. But it shouldn’t scare us, it is cause to be guarded & cautious, but not afraid.  Why? What’s the difference?
